Contest Night!

Fri, Sep 19th, 2008

Bolton Banter Toastmasters held its Humourous Speech and Table Topics Contest on September 18th.  Bondy Nair chaired the speech part of the evening and Eva Britton chaired Table Topics.  For those who have never entered the Humourous Speech Contest because you think you need to be another Jay Leno or George Carlin, remember that you can find humour in everyday things.  Jillian Lucas spoke of the joys (or not) of having a younger sister.  In her speech about the handy GPS, Carol Dowell did creditable imitations of Sean Connery, Arnold the Terminator and my favourite, Elmer Fudd. Try to imagine Elmer's voice giving you directions in heavy traffic.  Pat Burness talked about relationships with cats and a guy named Bart.  Pat's speech was her icebreaker and won her second place in the contest.  Carol captured first place.

Eric Solowka, Dan O'Reilly and Lorraine Van Wagner participated in the Table Topics portion of the contest.  All three fashioned a two minute speech based on the word "options".  For those who have never entered this contest, remember that it requires no preparation, only imagination.  All three speakers wove quite different stories using the same word.  Eric took first place and Lorraine Van Wagner placed second.  The first and second place finishers in both contests may compete in the Area 15 contest, to be held in Alliston on October 8th.

Bolton Banter enjoys guests and we were happy to welcome Jim, Leslie and Andrew.  Jim made the decision to join our club and we look forward to hearing him speak soon.

Remember that the next meeting, to be held October 2nd, is "Hats off to Toastmasters" evening.  Bring your favourite hat.

Thanks to all who helped with our contest including the judges, chairs, timers, vote counters and most especially the contestants.  It was an enjoyable evening.

Cheers and regards - Lorraine Van Wagner (Treasurer and Webmaster)
