Luck of the Irish

Fri, Mar 19th, 2010

St. Paddy's Day was the theme of our March 18th meeting.  Accordingly, members wore their best green outfits and club founder Eric O'Solowka was resplendent in a pair of plus fours and a hat that appeared to consist of green paint chips.  Faith and begorrah, a good time was had by all.  Chair Ben Allison was ably assisted by his elves, Sarah and Stefan Allison.  We were pleased to welcome two guests to join our St. Patrick's Day festivities.

Table Topics Master Eric Solowka used the paint chips from his hat as the focal point of this part of the meeting.  Participants had to pick a paint chip from the hat band and relate the name of the colour, e.g. jungle vine, nature mist, to life, laughter and love.  We learned there are many ways to describe and enjoy the colour green.  Lorraine Van Wagner took the ribbon in this event.

In the announcement/business/educator portion of the meeting, Ben described his role and duties as Bolton Banter's  Sergeant At Arms.  There were two announcements.  On Saturday, March 20th,  Division M's International Speech and Evaluation contest will be held at the York Regional Administration Building located at 17250 Yonge Street in Newmarket.  Registration commences at 11:30 a.m. and the contest begins at noon.  The District 86 spring conference will be held from April 16th to 18th at the Delta Meadowvale Resort and Convention Centre in Mississauga.  The district is proud to present as keynote speaker the current world speaking champion, Mark Hunter of Australia.  Check the district's website for details on how to register.

Eric Solowka, who had recently been hospitalized, thanked everyone for their messages of support and also for the floral arrangement.  Good to have you back Eric.

There were two speeches this evening.  Lorraine Van Wagner, speaking from an advanced manual, assumed the role of a company executive announcing a plant closure in "Closing Plant Borden".  A question and answer session was a part of this presentation and the membership did not disappoint as they asked some penetrating questions.  Corina Simu, working on project #7 from the CC manual, passed around the Ferrero Rocher as she spoke about how "Life is like a box of chocolates".  We learned a lot about Corina's experiences as a tour guide, an engineering student and a newcomer to Canada.

Our next meeting is set for April 1st, April Fool's Day.  Don't miss this one!  Cheers and regards -
